My wife and I were coming out of the supermarket on the way to our car this past Saturday.

As we approached our car, we heard the most beautiful songbird. The bird was sitting in this little tree in a median in the parking lot. All by itself, it found this tree that was obviously planted after the parking lot was made.

Here it was, in the middle of all these cars and concrete singing away in the most beautiful way.

It didn’t care that there were lots of cars around, or that it wasn’t a big forest, or that there were no other birds around. It sang because it needed to sing.

So beautiful. It needed to express itself because it existed.

I wonder if we could be like that little bird, and if we could live our life in a joyful way regardless of our circumstances. I wonder if it were possible to be happy regardless of whether we have achieved that pinnacle of success that we deem to be so important to us.

Many times, it seems that we are waiting for that perfect job, perfect home, perfect relationship, or perfect health resolution before we can be happy.

And of course, life doesn’t work that way. All those markers of success may or may not happen. Life is weird that…
