Gentleness Shows Up in the Unknown

Life is not always as it appears to be

Are there things that you are certain about? Do you know that you are right?

These questions and more like it have been swirling about my mind this week.

I have been listening to stories by people who say they know the truth about something, only to be contradicted by someone else who says that person is wrong.

The difficultly for me is that I am hearing these statements from people in positions of authority.

One of them must be lying.

Right?

Or is there something else going on here?

Much of my life I have lived in the certainty of my beliefs. I spent time in a religious order that taught me that they were right and that anyone who didn’t believe what they did was wrong.

Who was right? Was it the religious order I was in? Or was everyone else right?

The demand for certainty causes much stress and pain in the world. It has caused wars and other societal chaos over the millennia.

Several years ago, I was taught a good lesson about certainty and how it relates to truth.
